Tanay has a population of nearly 120,000 inhabitants and is located about 50 kilometers in the southeast of Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
You have to convince the voters of your person and your qualifications. Probably, one of my advantages is beeing young. Moreover I was introduced to politics from a very early age, since my father used to be the mayor of Tunay.
Definitely. My vision is that every Tanayan, no matter of being rich or poor, is receiving basic services at a professional and timely manner from the public institutions run by the municipality. Therefore, we also need more e-governance, so the service for our citizens becomes less complicated and faster.
It’s easier to understand them or rather us, I would say. An example, we, the young people, usually like to hike. So we organized a tree planting event in the mountains of our municipality. We wanted young people to do something for their city, that they show solidarity with their city.
This is just one of the events we try to do, to create a higher public spirit.
We were awarded for our prevention and awareness campaign. With this campaign, within one year, we managed to make nine villages drug-free.
There were five, six cases. The police operates independently. At the beginning of my term, we had 50 detaines involved in drugs in my city. Today, there are 150 detainees.
There were cases, but always causes of natural death. Drug dealers are generally not in a good health.
In a certain way it helps me to manage the challenges in my municipality. Nevertheless as a private business owner it’s easier to build a new office building. But if you build a school as a mayor, you have to start with the planning, one or two years before; you have to involve your departments and also the different stakeholders. Running a city is a democratic process. Are you between 18 and 30 and from Europe or Asia? The Municipality of Tanay takes part in a European-Asian-Jobshadowing project about political participation. Young people go for four weeks to the Phillippines and are introduced in a local, regional or national government. Get further details from firstname.lastname@example.org
Rex Tanjuatco is only 26 years old and already the mayor of Tanay for one year.
